Home/Faculty Evaluation/Interrupting Bias in Peer Evaluation of Teaching

Interrupting Bias in Peer Evaluation of Teaching

This section provides a ready-to-implement workshop designed to help peer evaluators recognize and interrupt bias when evaluating a peer’s teaching.

The goal of this ready-to-implement workshop is to provide faculty and administrators who are engaged in the faculty evaluation process with materials that can be tailored to meet the unique needs of an institution and its faculty. The goals of the workshop are to identify structural, procedural, or personal biases that may influence the peer evaluation of teaching (PET) process and to foster core institutional values towards a more inclusive and equitable PET process.

While the workshop will benefit all employees, the target audience is those in a position to evaluate peers for promotion, tenure, and/or reappointment, including department chairs, deans, and members of an institution’s personnel committee. While the workshop is organized around teaching evaluation, most elements are relevant to many aspects of faculty evaluation.
