Preparing Faculty to Be Evaluated with Ready-to-Implement Workshops

This section offers a set of customizable workshops that can be used individually or together as a series to support faculty members who are being formally evaluated.

How The Workshops Were Developed

The seven workshops below were developed following a series of focus groups with faculty from three ACS campuses, divided as early career/non-tenured, pre-tenured faculty, tenured faculty (associate and recently full professors), and faculty who had served as department chairs or as members of the promotion and tenure committees. Participants were asked to share their experiences (helpful and unhelpful) in preparing for faculty evaluation; advice, support, and mentoring they received in preparing evaluations; and training they received in evaluating or mentoring other faculty. Additionally, they were encouraged to reflect on what they might have done differently and what forms of support they would like to see offered in the future. Focus group data were analyzed for common elements that transcended institutions’ idiosyncratic evaluation requirements, processes, and approaches for evaluating faculty in terms of teaching, research, and service.

The Faculty Workshops

  1. Cracking the myths around the evaluation process: An orientation to the evaluation process:
  2. Reviewing supporting materials: Teaching
  3. Reviewing supporting materials: Research and scholarship
  4. Reviewing supporting materials: Service
  5. Crafting a successful path forward: Professional goals and action plan
  6. Writing a letter of self-evaluation: the reflective narrative
  7. Giving and receiving feedback on materials

These workshops can be implemented in a variety of forms:  as a one (or two) day intensive, as a series of interconnected workshops offered throughout a term, or as stand-alone events. Each was designed to last 90 minutes but can be tailored for shorter or longer time periods.

Each workshop includes the workshop’s goals, resources for the facilitator (that can also be shared with the participants), pre-session tasks and activities that can be assigned, an outline for the activities and topics to be covered in a 90-minute workshop, and post-session tasks and activities for consideration.

For those who offer all (or multiple) workshops, assessment questions for the overall bootcamp experience are included at the end.
