ACS Workshop: Tools for Thinking: Designing Responsible, AI-Supported Approaches to Reading Scientific Literature

Monday, November 9, 2026 – 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm E.T. (Virtual Workshop)

Workshop Facilitators: Linda M. Boland (University of Richmond), Fiona Watson (Washington and Lee University), Barbara Lom (Davidson College), and Andrew Bell (University of Richmond)

How can AI help students engage more deeply with scientific literature without replacing critical thinking? As part of our Summer Collaborations program, this virtual workshop explores human-centered, ethical approaches to using AI as a reading assistant for primary STEM literature. Participants will develop practical strategies, classroom-ready resources, and assessment approaches that support evidence-based reasoning, scientific inquiry, and student confidence while preserving student responsibility for interpretation and judgment.

We look forward to your participation in these community-driven conversations and learning opportunities. Contact workshops@acsouth.edu with questions.
