The Associated Colleges of the South (ACS) is pleased to offer The Effective Department Chair, a professional development program designed to support faculty leaders stepping into or currently serving in department chair roles. Running from September 2025 through February 2026, the program offers structured support, peer collaboration, and mentorship grounded in the realities of academic leadership.
Through monthly virtual sessions and small-group mentoring, participants will explore topics such as adaptive leadership, inclusive departmental practices, effective communication and feedback, and balancing scholarly identity with administrative duties. The program will provide practical tools, peer connection, and structured reflection to help chairs thrive in their roles. Session topics will include managing difficult conversations, fostering faculty success, and collaborating effectively with senior leadership.
The program is open to new and aspiring chairs as well as experienced chairs seeking fresh perspective. A team of seasoned academic leaders from across ACS institutions will facilitate the series.
Early registration is encouraged by August 15. The cost is $500 per participant. For more details and to register, visit The Effective Department Chair site or contact Shiree Williams at swilliams@acsouth.edu.
