Centre College President named to the NCAA Presidents Council.

Centre College President Milton C. Moreland has been named to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Presidents Council.

The Presidents Council is the highest governing body in Division III athletics, implementing policies adopted by the NCAA’s Board of Governors.

“It is an honor to join the Presidents Council and represent Centre College and the Southern Athletic Association at such an impactful level,” Moreland said. “Division III student athletes learn teamwork, resilience, and determination and I look forward to promoting their successes.”

Centre competes in 25 intercollegiate sports — 11 men’s sports, 13 women’s and one coed — with nearly 50 percent of the student body participating in one or more sport. The College has recently undertaken the largest construction project in its 200-year history to create a 135,000 square foot athletic and wellness complex, housing swim and dive, indoor and outdoor track and field, and strength and wellness training facilities, in addition to new fields for football, lacrosse, baseball and softball.

Moreland will join the Presidents Council at the conclusion of the 2024 NCAA Convention and will serve a four-year appointment. The Council oversees the division budget and establishes strategic priorities and may sponsor amendments to the NCAA Constitution.

“College sports prepare our students to be leaders in the classroom, on the field and in their communities,” Moreland said. “I’m eager to work with the Presidents Council to advance strategic priorities in support of collegiate athletics, and by extension, our wider campus communities.”

Division III is the NCAA’s largest division, comprised of about 40 percent of its total membership. In all, more than 186,000 student athletes compete in DIII athletics, representing 438 institutions across 36 states. Moreland joins 15 other college presidents on the 21-member council. The body also includes two student-athlete members and two college chancellors.

“The Southern Athletic Association is ecstatic to have President Moreland represent our conference on the national stage,” said SAA Commissioner Stacey LaDew. “Milton is an adamant supporter of student-athletes, not only at Centre College but throughout our league. His leadership, experience and enthusiasm will serve the Division and its membership well, especially at this crucial juncture in collegiate athletics.”
